Jar of Hearts - Main Characters :Read Description:

The two main characters of Hangman ~ Jar of Hearts, Gotokugi Mikeru and Sugiyama Nagisa in chibi form, with their standard weapons.

Mikeru Gotokuji - Age 15, first year high school student in Tokyo, Japan. He uses a scythe called the Gemini; he is the only "contractee" in history to ever have used one.

Nagisa Sugiyama - Age 15, first year high school student in Tokyo, Mikeru's friend since middle school. She uses a Thompson machine gun, a pistol, and an AK-47 infused with soul flame.

Soul Flame - Literally a manifestation of a tiny bit of a person's soul. The colors are different, depending on how a person became a contractee. The three types - Vernae, Alumni, and Umbrae (Shinigami). To provide more killing power, a person can infuse a regular weapon with a bit of soul flame, like Nagisa's AK-47.

Vernae - People who are born into the business, like Nagisa. Their soul flames are the standard yellow/orange. At birth, children must go through a ritual where their souls are placed into jars, hence the title Jar of Hearts. Should the glass jar break, the soul escapes, and the child dies. In this world, there is a steady decline in life because of these accidents. Children are not required to fight until the age of 3, and their parents can protect and fight on their behalf until age 6.

Alumni - Regular humans who make contracts later in life, like Mikeru. They can be the result of two humans, an alumnus and a human, or a verna and a human. Their flames are green. They go through the same ritual as vernae infants.

Shinigami - Souls who are reincarnated as "human shells" on Earth, as compensation for their sins when they were alive. They are often the strongest, as they do not feel pain, and cannot die, even when their soul jars are broken.

Contractors - Demons who make deals with humans to turn them into alumni. Like Puella Magi, humans can go to these contractors with a wish, and they will be converted. However, in this doujinshi, rather than having their wish granted first, demons only give alumni the possibility of having their wish granted. Alumni are given specialized weapons by their contractors, the jar with their own soul, and another glass jar to store the souls of the victims that they kill. Depending on the wish, people have to kill a certain amount of fellow contractees.

Veteran bands - Cloth bands around a contractee's wrist to signify how long they have been fighting for. Nagisa started fighting when she was 4, and this is her 11th year, so she has 3 bands. They are given in the time span of 3 years.

Copper - 15 years
Bronze - 18 years
Platinum - 21 years
Silver - 24 years
Gold (Nobody has gotten gold before; Everybody who has gotten close in history has died before getting this) - 27 years
